About these plots:

These plots are based on anomalies from climatology of daily regional Southern Hemisphere sea ice area for 12 month periods. The three regions shown are:
  • The Weddell Sea (defined as sea ice between 305º and 350ºE)
  • The Ross Sea (defined as sea ice between 170º and 210ºE)
  • Queen Maud Land (defined as sea ice between 350º and 30ºE)
  • Climatology is based on the period 1979-2008. Blue banding represents the range of daily historical values for the period 1979-2006.

    Data are from the National Snow and Ice Data Center and are based on concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I Passive Microwave Data.
