Education:
- University of Cape Town, 1999. PhD. Department of Environmental and Geographical Science (Climatology).
- University of Cape Town, 1993. B.Sc.(Hons).
Interests and Research:
Debbie works in the Seasonal Prediction Systems Team and is involved with the development and assessment of the Bureau's seasonal prediction system, POAMA. POAMA consists of state-of-the-art dynamical coupled ocean/atmosphere models and data assimilation systems. Debbie has been responsible for developing the atmospheric and land initialisation (ALI) scheme that is used in POAMA, as well as assessing various aspects of the prediction skill of POAMA. She is also involved in the extension of the POAMA system to intraseasonal time-scales and understanding intraseasonal climate variability and prediction using POAMA.
Prior to this she worked in the Model Development Group (Bureau of Meteorology) on land surface modelling (2003-2005), on climate modelling at the Hadley Centre, UK Met Office (July 2000-2002) and lectured climatology at the University of Cape Town (1999-June 2000).
Debbie's primary interests include: seasonal and intraseasonal prediction, climate variability, climate modelling, climate change and climate extremes.
