Interests and Research:
My primary interests are coupled physical-ecological marine modelling applications. Currently I am leading a project to develop new prediction SST-based products using the coupled seasonal forecast model POAMA for coral bleaching risk in the Western Pacific under PACCSAP. This work builds on previous research and development of the first dynamical operational forecasts for coral bleaching risk on the Great Barrier Reef. Additionally I am also leading a complementary project to update and operationalise ReefTemp, a tailored real-time remote sensing SST-based application for assessing coral bleaching risk on the Great Barrier Reef. Both the seasonal forecasts and ReefTemp nowcasts are important components of the GBR Early Warning System for coral bleaching.
Other seasonal prediction work includes the co-leading of another PACCSAP project to develop seasonal sea level prediction products for the Western Pacific. These products will be the first of their kind in the world and a valuable tool to assist Partner Pacific Island nations in increase their resilience under the impacts of climate change.
I am also working on the application of POAMA in the management of multi-species longline fisheries along the east Australian coast, salmon aquaculture in Tasmania, prawn aquaculture in Queensland and the Little Penguin colonies on Phillip Island.
