Ocean Observation, Assessment and Prediction (OOAP):   Aims

Overall Objectives:

To observe, monitor and understand the key global processes that drive variability and change in Australia's regional and coastal ocean waters, and apply that understanding to model and predict the behaviors of the oceans of the Australian region and their role in regional and global climate and the function of biological systems.

We aim to:

  • Play a leading role in monitoring and assessing the state of the ocean environment;
  • Provide advanced systems for providing oceanic and marine meteorological observations for ocean, climate and weather prediction;
  • Produce fundamental knowledge and understanding of earth system science and climate processes, specifically in the area of coupling and interaction of the ocean with the atmosphere and hydrosphere;
  • Lead a national capacity for observing the oceans, including the relevant fluxes.
  • Support and enhance public good ocean forecasts;
  • Support and enhance sea state and marine meteorological forecast systems;
  • Provide products and services for defence applications;
  • Support and enhance the Australian Tsunami Warning System;
  • Enhance our understanding and knowledge of ocean variability and predictability
  • Provide better management of coastal waters through understanding of physical influences on biological systems and coastal impacts of climate change.
