Atmosphere-Land Observation and Assessment (ALOA)

The group brings together the related observational capabilities of CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research and the Bureau of Meteorology. It provides a unique capability for observing the Earth's atmosphere, to:

  • improve our understanding of the Earth's physics and atmospheric chemistry,
  • provide and evaluate data to support and improve atmospheric models, and
  • determine trends in the Atmosphere-land system to inform decisions.
This group interacts strongly with other parts of the Bureau of Meteorology, particularly the Observation and Engineering Branch. It also interacts with a number of CSIRO Flagships.

ALOA focuses on land-air exchanges of energy, water, carbon; high quality measurements of the atmospheric composition of radiatively and chemically active gases and particles, remote sensing and data assimilation/fusion. This includes developing the necessary technologies, maintaining our observational infrastructure and integrating observations with models. As such, it has very close links to the Earth System Modelling and Weather and Environment Prediction core capabilities and provides the underpinning observations for many climate applications.
